Summary

“While the history books are filled with tales of obsessive, visionary geniuses who remade the world in their image with sheer, almost irrational force, I’ve found that history is also made by individuals who fought their egos at every turn, who eschewed the spotlight, and who put their higher goals above their desire for recognition。” – from the Prologue

Many of us insist the main impediment to a full, successful life is the outside world。 In fact, the most common enemy lies within: our ego。 Early in our careers, it impedes learning and the cultivation of talent。 With success, it can blind us to our faults and sow future problems。 In failure, it magnifies each blow and makes recovery more difficult。 At every stage, ego holds us back。

The Ego is the Enemy draws on a vast array of stories and examples, from literature to philosophy to history。 We meet fascinating figures like Howard Hughes, Katharine Graham, Bill Belichick, and Eleanor Roosevelt, all of whom reached the highest levels of power and success by conquering their own egos。 Their strategies and tactics can be ours as well。

But why should we bother fighting ego in an era that glorifies social media, reality TV, and other forms of shameless self-promotion?  Armed with the lessons in this book, as Holiday writes, “you will be less invested in the story you tell about your own specialness, and as a result, you will be liberated to accomplish the world-changing work you’ve set out to achieve。”

I find it to be an easy read。 Chapters are short and the ideas are concise, preferably to read the book in short bursts。 Unlike certain other non-fiction books, the author seldom repeat his points as he introduced something new for every chapter。 Would recommend everyone to read this book at least once in our lifetime; we all could benefit from an ego-check from time to time。

A challenging abs jam packed read。 Holiday “does it again” and had me questioning whether our egos are helpful at all, or truly the vessel of self sabotage and destroyer of good he paints it to be

。。more

Ryan Holiday's "Ego is the Enemy" was somewhat of a mixed bag of a read for me。While I greatly appreciated some of the author's observations about ego and the historical stories, anecdotes and aphorisms he used to make his point, the book lacked in definition and substance。 "Ego Is the Enemy", like many other books I've read in the self-improvement genre, is written to make the reader feel things, rather than to know things。 This is not inherently a bad thing, but quotable one-liners will only g Ryan Holiday's "Ego is the Enemy" was somewhat of a mixed bag of a read for me。While I greatly appreciated some of the author's observations about ego and the historical stories, anecdotes and aphorisms he used to make his point, the book lacked in definition and substance。 "Ego Is the Enemy", like many other books I've read in the self-improvement genre, is written to make the reader feel things, rather than to know things。 This is not inherently a bad thing, but quotable one-liners will only get you so far when you're trying to understand something and apply it to your way of thinking and being。 Almost feels like this book should be read as a light introduction to the topic of ego, followed up by more of a "deep dive" where the topic is given more shape。 All in all, "Ego Is the Enemy" is a spark, not a flame。 It could be a start to something, but doesn't necessarily satisfy entirely as a stand-alone。On a more personal note; I think there's something to be said about how I couldn't bring myself to read this book two years ago when I originally picked it up。 While I had my issues with a certain type of "narrowness" or "superficiality" of it even now, it does challenge you to take a look at yourself and your own behavior - which I take to be its objective。 And as anecdotal and emotional it may seem; because I felt the book achieved this objective, I was more than happy to give it a 3/5 star rating。 。。。more

I found this book quick to read, I love books that use analogies or real-life examples to supplement the messages they want to teach。This book was definitely very interesting but there aren't really any actionable steps for the reader to take。 How do you move your ego aside? How do you swallow pride? The book tells you to just do it really。I still enjoyed it but it was more of a history lesson than a self-help book。I would say this is the opposite of Eat that Frog, where there were no narratives I found this book quick to read, I love books that use analogies or real-life examples to supplement the messages they want to teach。This book was definitely very interesting but there aren't really any actionable steps for the reader to take。 How do you move your ego aside? This, I will say, is maybe the most important book I’ve read of all times。 I love that this book says the things that can be hard to say - it’s direct and realistic。It doesn’t sugarcoat or try to excuse what it says。 It’s brutally honest, yet not brutal in a way you feel attacked (but if it was so, maybe that would have been an ego issue?)。I experienced «success» as a teenager, which gave me pretty naive look on the world。 I think I thought it was all OK as long as I was nice to people。 But you This, I will say, is maybe the most important book I’ve read of all times。 I love that this book says the things that can be hard to say - it’s direct and realistic。It doesn’t sugarcoat or try to excuse what it says。 It’s brutally honest, yet not brutal in a way you feel attacked (but if it was so, maybe that would have been an ego issue?)。I experienced «success» as a teenager, which gave me pretty naive look on the world。 I think I thought it was all OK as long as I was nice to people。 But you can be nice to people and still have an ego that will ruin it for yourself。 And that’s exactly what happened: I ended up miserable, anxiety and actually getting further away from what I thought I could achieve。 And I know it's still possible to achieve them, but this time I’m aware that if that’s going to happen, I need to work on my ego, and I also don’t have to try to reach milestones that looks like success to others: Today I just want to serve others with what I can contribute with, regardless of what that is。I have never related to a book more, and I really have no problem admitting it, all though of course you don’t like the thought of having had a big ego as that sounds bad, but I don’t think it is: I think it’s all about what you do with that ego。Just recently today, I was talking to someone about things that could really challenge my ego about what this and that person had done, and the way my self-awareness has increased from reading this book, I felt such a freedom when talking about things that could have made me feel angry and bitter。 And as someone put so nicely: «“Bitterness is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die。”» My favorite chapter in the book is "The effort is enough", where Holiday talks about it being about internal standards and not external。 What you are creating, doing, should be the enjoyment enough and not getting an external reward or recognition。 This reminds me of when I was younger and had no idea or plan to do something crazy with what I created, but I just wanted to create。I’ve always been curious about this book, and I’m glad I finally read this。 Ryan Holiday’s writing is very comfortable to read。 This is a book which, without doubt, is bringing value to the table。 I am already excited to go through it again and get a reminder now and then。 The same day I read this, the same day I could pull so many lines between situations that day and the book when talking about things with other people。 I think a lot of people would truly benefit from reading this。 。。。more

After reading A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy and Stoicism and the Art of Happiness I happened to follow Ryan Holiday's podcast THE DAILY STOIC。 This is my first book by Ryan Holiday and Oh boy! It was disappointing。 I would suggest the above two books than to go for EGO IS THE ENEMY。 Unlike A GUIDE TO THE GOOD LIFE & STOICISM AND THE ART OF HAPPINESS,this book doesn't provide practical and contemplative exercises that one can apply to daily life。 Instead what you get is a clichéd theme of self-help books using anecdotal stories and popular individual success/failure and trying to fit a book's core concept (here 'EGO IS THE ENEMY') to explain their success/failure。 Of course, each chapter starts with quotes from others and Ryan Holiday himself comes up with some good quotes in the book。 But compared to William B。Irvine and Donald Robertson giving practical tips and strategies through contemplative exercises and meditations and explaining the philosophy conceptually, Ryan Holiday keeps on writing a descriptive essay revolving around success/failure stories and drawing the conclusion EGO IS THE ENEMY。 I'm not sure if Ryan Holiday meant this book to be one based on Stoic principles。 But the main incentive or motive to let go of the ego according to this book is that you can have success only if you let go of your ego。 It becomes paradoxical to let go of your ego to achieve success。 To become invested in success is itself hallmark feature of ego and this book never addresses the paradox it creates。 Worse, it capitalizes on it by repeating that one can achieve and/or maintain success only by letting go of ego。 While I like Holiday's recitation and elaboration of stoic principles on his podcast and his conversations about Stoic practices。 But this book is in a overbeaten & trite format used by many self-help books that provide a motivational high when some quote sounds impressive and the finishing the book gives you the feeling, that you are a better person than before or will be, that probably would last for a day or two before reality sets in and one doesn't have practical counter-strategies to use。By reading Stoicism, I understood how useful & powerful maxims in facing life on a daily basis (not just a random quote taken out of context or without never having read the context to support one's opinion) and one of the positives of this book is that it offers nice quotes that could be used as maxims when read through the lens of stoicism。 。。。more

In my point of view, this is a book of personal development for starters, It's not bad at all, but I found it a little bit repetitive, with some good historical examples, but werent exploited enough, just touched little aspects of some characters。 Yes, the subject is not wide enough for a 200 more or less pages (although small ones)。 In my point of view, this is a book of personal development for starters, It's not bad at all, but I found it a little bit repetitive, with some good historical examples, but werent exploited enough, just touched little aspects of some characters。 Yes, the subject is not wide enough for a 200 more or less pages (although small ones)。 。。。more
